We're pleased to announce our partnership with Genozip, making GenStore.org a reseller partner for Genozip in Portugal. We also work with customers across Europe.

What is Genozip?​

Genozip is compression software built specifically for genomic data. It handles the formats used throughout genomics research, including FASTQ, SAM/BAM/CRAM, VCF, FASTA and others, and it can work on files that are already compressed with gzip, bzip2 or xz.

Genozip is lossless, so a decompressed file is exactly identical to the original, which can be verified by MD5. Compression ratios depend on the data, which is why Genozip encourages testing on your own files, and it offers a free 30-day evaluation.

Other features include:

  • Reference-based compression, which improves results for FASTQ, BAM and VCF files
  • Encryption of compressed data with a password
  • Format translation, such as SAM to BAM or BAM to FASTQ, through its genocat tool
  • Genozip Deep, which co-compresses FASTQ and BAM files that belong together, and restores both exactly when decompressing

Why it matters?​

Sequencing labs, hospitals, biobanks and research groups generate large volumes of FASTQ, BAM and VCF files, and storing and backing them up is a growing cost. Compressing archives well can reduce that cost significantly, without losing any information.

Licensing​

To use the product a license is required, but at the same time uncompressing Genozip-compressed files is free forever. That means your data stays accessible even if a license lapses.
